So you’ve got a racing drone, but youโre looking to go faster than your mates;ย tilted motor mounts are the answer. Not only will they turbocharge your mini quad, they will alsoย improveย visibility so that you spend less time looking at the ground and more time eyeing up the obstacles ahead.
So how do they work? Simply put, tilted mounts direct more thrust horizontally, meaning that the drone has to pitch forward less to achieve the same speed as a conventionalย setup. Flying flatter helps toย reduceย drag which improves the top speed and it also means that theย camera remains looking ahead.
This particular mount is angled at 7 degrees and is designed to fit 1806 type motors, such as the DYS BE1806 and EMAX MT1806. The mounts also uniquely feature a carbon fibre ring that is designed to help protect the motor in a crash. A pair of mounts is included, so you will need to purchase two sets to convert a quadcopter. The mounts are simply attached to your frame in place of the motors, with your motors being first secured to the mounts.
As tilted mounts alter the flying angle of the frame,ย you must make a small setup adjustment to account for this,ย otherwise the quadcopter will move forward when level. You can either run aย new accelerometer calibration with the craft tilted so that the props are level, or tilt compensation can be set in software via the following command:
OpenPilot: In GCS, go to INS and change Pitch to -10*
Naze32 / FLIP 32: In CLI type set align_board_pitch = +10*
*This number should match the tilt of the inclined motor mounts, typically 10 degrees.
