Adding capacitors to your setup can make your FPV video signal cleaner and your drone fly better. Low ESR capacitors can reduce video noise in your FPV feed, reduce noise that can corrupt motor / ESC, radio control signals, and clean up noise going to your Gyro sensors – thus improving flight performance. They can also protect your electronic components from voltage spikes. Overall they are a highly recommended addition to any build.
Unicon series of capacitors have among the lowest ESR (equivalent series resistance) values in the market. Having a ultra low ESR value means that they can filter out noise better than other capacitors with higher ESR values.
Battery usage and recommended capacitor Voltage number recommendations:
4S:Â 25-35V
5S: 35V
6S: 35-50V
What is a capacitor? A capacitor is a device that stores electrical energy, but unlike a battery does not itself generate energy. They are placed in an electrical circuit to smooth out fluctuations in voltage levels. They absorb and release energy as the circuit current demand changes.
Capacity: There are no rules on total uF required, it depends on the power requirements of your quad and how noisy it is. Generally speaking use 330uF-470uF on individual ESCs, or a 1000uF on the PDB / main battery connection. If the capacitor in your build keeps getting hot after every flight, it could be an indication that the cap is too small.
Installation Tip: It is extremely important to understand the polarity of a capacitor. If you make a mistake, the capacitor won’t work and can even explode. The shorter leg indicates negative (-) the longer leg is positive (+).
