The legendary X9D Radio Controller is the latest radio in the FrSky Taranis range to be updated to the new ACCESS protocol and at the same time they’ve improved its electronics and added some new features too.
The most noticeable changes to the X9D is the additionย of a new ergonomically friendly momentary button on the top left shoulder of the radio, a new scroll wheel which replaces push buttons to make it even easier and faster to navigate the program menus and finally an electronic power switch which is impossible to accidentally turn off and includes a LED that changes colour according to the battery status of the radio.
There are also some less obvious changes to the inners of the radio. An updated processor (STM32 F407)ย is used in conjunction with a re-designed mainboard to further increase the computing capability and increases the data storage. This upgradeย not only improves the running of LUA scripts, but it also optimizes overall performance like voice speech outputs. Another welcome change is the addition USB charging which saves having to buy a DC power adapter. It also means you can now charge your radio from a USB power brick in the field and also use the radio to play on flight simulatorsย and it willย charged simultaneously.
Of course, the ACCESS communication protocol that comes preinstalled as standard on the X9D Plus 2019 radio also brings with it a whole host of new features. The radio now boasts 24 channels with a faster baud rate and lower latency. Also with the new spectrum analysis function added to the OpenTX firmware, it is possible to check the airwaves for RF noise.
If you want to use the ACCST protocol, D16 is supported so you can continue to use your existing X-series receivers without updating. D8 protocol is no longer supported but the X9D does have a JR module bay so you could install the external XJT Module or aย multi-protocol module to bind with D8 receivers.ย Lastly, crossfire is compatible with the radio after upgrading to the latest OpenTX build to enable CRSF.
Over all this version of the X9D will give you a further improved experience based on the classic Taranis remote control,ย makingย this an ideal transmitter for any skill level.
Versions: There are two versions of the new X9D Plus 2019 Radio, the standard version and the SE (Special Edition) – Please select via the drop-down cart menu: The SE 2019 version is installed with upgraded switches and M9 hall sensor gimbals. Both upgrades provide improved durability and the gimbals in particular are smoother and more precise than G9D potentiometer type gimbals fitted to the standard edition. With the SE model, the antenna is removable via a RP-SMA connector. This allows you to take it off for transportation or change to a different antenna, such as the Infinity 24 High Gain Antenna without requiring a modification. While both versions have a trainer port, the SE radio also features the addition of a PARA wireless trainer function which makes it compatible with the FrSky Free Link App and AirLink S. Finally, The SE model comes complete with a carry case and is also available in premium colour options: Carbon fibre and Midnight Blue.

What is ACCESS Protocol?
Advanced Communication Control Elevated Spread Spectrum
ACCESS is FrSkyโs most advanced protocol to date. Building on the acclaimed ACCST protocol, ACCESS offers visionary features like Smart Shareโข, Smart Matchโข, and Trio Control โข. Once a receiver is registered to a radio, it can be re-bound at any time without accessing your receivers F/S button. Sharing models has never been easier, and updating has also been simplified, you no longer need to physically connect your receivers for updating. In addition, new tools like a Spectrum Analyzer and also now supports up to 24 channels with increased transmission rate, lower latency and the elevated performance.
- Supports 24 full-range channels
- Increased baud rate and lower latency
- Wireless binding, updates, and configuration
- Automatic binding (Smart Match)
- Channel remapping
- Manageable telemetry (Trio ControlTM)
- Allows radio to act as a Spectrum Analyzer
- Allows radio to act as a Power Meter
- Advanced Encryption Algorithm
