Unhappy with your FPV camera, have you thought about changing the lens? Most FPV CCD board cameras use a screw-in lens, which can be easily replaced with a different type of lens.
The focal length of a lens measured in mm determines the cameras field of view (FOV). The lower the focal length, the wider the viewing angle i.e. 2.8mm gives a wider FOV than 3.6mm. When it comes to choosing a lens, ultimately it comes down to personal preference. However, generally beginners prefer to fly with a wide-angle lens, like a 2.5mm – 2.8mm which allows you to see much more of your surroundings. On the other hand, some more experienced fliers, prefer a narrower FOV like that offered by a 3.6mm lens, which produces a ‘flatter’, less distorted image with greater detail. Depth perception is also made easier with a 3.6mm lens.
All of the lenses have an aperture of F2.0 and are suitable for 1/3″ CCD chipsets (most FPV board cameras).
- 2.1mm: 140° ‘Super Wide Angle’ FOV
- 2.5mm: 130° ‘Wide Angle’ FOV
- 2.8mm: 115°
- 3.6mm: 90° ‘Flat’ FOV
- 4.3mm: 78°
- 6mm: 54° ‘Zoomed’ FOV
