Which motor should I use with which ESC and prop combination is a question we get asked a lot. With a massive array of products and brands to choose from, component matching can be quite challenging, especially if you are new to the hobby. Our advice to beginners is to look at what other people are using successfully. If you do that, you’ll see that the DYS products are very popular with FPV drone racers and mini quad builders alike. DYS have now brought out a series of ‘power packs’, which makes the whole selection process much easier and cheaper too.
The DYS E-series out-runner brushless motors are designed with one thing in mind; maximising multirotor performance! Unlike many so-called multirotor motors these have been engineered specifically for multirotor use and are not based on airplane motors.
The DYS BL and SN series ESCs are a common sight in a lot of racing quads and for good reason; they are incredibly light and deliver a really locked-in feel. However, as with any technology things move on and now DYS have upgraded the BL/SN ESCs with their new XM series. The XM series feature the latest in ESC technology, which improves performance, efficiency and reliability. The XM20A V1 in particular features the new Silicon Lab 8051 F390 series processor, which has a running speed of 50MHz, the SN/BL series ran at 16MHz.
Messy quad builds, if you ask us, ESCs are the problem. They have 7 wires leading from them, which is a recipe for untidiness. While you can't remove the wires, you can hide them and this ESCs lets you do just that. The XML20A is unique in that it is probably one of the slimmest 20A ESCs on the market. Measuring just 8.5mm wide, it will fit inside tubes as narrow as 10mm. So if your multirotor uses carbon tubes, this is the ESC for you.
ESC firmware can make the difference between super stable flight and erratic flight. This handy USB programming tool allows you to quickly and easily update the firmware of your ESC by connecting directly to the ESC's signal wire and then to the USB port of your PC. With it, there is no need to cut open the heat shrink or use any additional interface components. Simply plug it in and flash!
It's designed to work with the DYS XM series ESCs running the BLHeli bootloader.
DYS's BLHeli series ESCs have gained a repuation within the drone racing community as being among the best value ESCs out there. Up until now all of the BLHeli series ESCs have been OPTO. Now this new BLB20A ESC includes a 5volt BEC which is pretty handy as it means you don't need an aditional BEC to power your flight controller. Like the rest of the BLHeli series, it's still tiny (not much bigger than its brother the BL20A OPTO), very light and it arrives flashed with the best multirotor firmware out there - BLHeli.
