Flying a multirotor is pretty awesome, but recording your flight to play back later is even more awesome! If you already own a GoPro you’re half way there… combine it with this 3 axis brushless gimbal are you will be ready to record stunning cinematic video in no time.

There is no contest between the quality of aerial video taken with a 3 axis verses a 2 axis gimbal, but up until now 3 axis gimbals have been reserved for larger cameras and more powerful multirotors. The DYS Smart changes this. It's one of the first 3 axis GoPro brushless gimbals on the market and in our opinion the best! Not only that but it also includes the brand new mini AlexMos controller, which runs the widely respected BaseCam SimpleBGC software. The added 3rd axis not only provides superior stablisation, but also allows you to fly the camera not just the multirotor!

What’s so fantastic about this brushless gimbal is that it comes ready to use out of the box - preloaded with firmware and setup by Flying Tech! All that’s required is mounting the gimbal to your multicopter, using either the supplied 10mm rail mount hooks or the spacers to directly bolt it to your frame. What’s more the gimbal will also fit the DJI Phantom without any modifications to the fitting bracket.

The wiring is also plug and play. The gimbal is supplied with a female JST connector, which can be plugged straight into one of our 3S balance port adapters to make powering the DYS Smart from your flight battery quick and easy. If you wish to control the gimbal remotely, the mini Alexmos controller provides a handy 5V to power a receiver.

The gimbal will come preconfigured with the 3rd axis set in 'follow mode'. This means the gimbal will follow the forward facing direction of the airframe but smooth out disturbances and movement when yawing the copter. This configuration is recommended for a single operator. The gimbal can also be setup to be controlled by a second handset, for full control of 2 axes and different operating modes.

The gimbal controller comes with the AlexMos 2.3 firmware preinstalled – after testing we don’t yet recommend version 2.4. However, as the board is an officially authorized version, it can be permanently upgraded with future firmware revisions.

If you plan on flying FPV using this gimbal with a GoPro you will require a Video Out Cable.

Please note: While the gimbal comes setup ready to go, we recommend conducting an accelerometer and gyro calibration before use. You may also need to optimise its PIDs to suit your style of flying - parameter setting requires patience and experience, but there are plenty of tutorials and guidance online to help.

Hi, we are currently trying to install our DYS 3 Axis gimbal on our 1st gen Phantom and are finding it difficult. Are there any decent instruction available online? I've been searching for about an hour, can't find anything beyond the schematic you have listed on the product page, we need help with wiring the gimbal to the Phantom mainboard. Any pointers would be MASSIVELY appreciated.

Hi Jonny,

The gimbal attaches to the Phantom using a couple of the provided spacers - use the central holes either side of the yaw motor to do this. To provide enough ground clearance you will need to raise the height of the undercarriage, a lot of people use foam tube on the landing skids for this.

With regards to wiring, the gimbal needs a 12V (3S) power supply; you can take this from one of the Phantom's auxiliary power lead (they are the red/grey cables going to each arm, you will need to solder a male JST plug to one - best to Google it).

If you don't wish to control the gimbal then you are done, if you do there are a few more steps.

To control the gimbal you will have to make or purchase a level switch which plugs into the back of the Phantom's transmitter, which gives a 7th, channel. The DYS Smart supports manual control of all of its axes, however as Phantom transmitter supports only one spare channel you will need to decide which you want to control - most people will prioritise pitch. You will then need to take a wire between the control input pin on the gimbal labeled RX-R and F2 on the Naza - you can pass the cable out through one of the Phantom's arms by removing one of the rubber plugs.

The final step requires you to use the Naza assistant software to enable gimbal control, and then the BaseCam software to configure the gimbal to detect an RC input.

Hope that helps

Is there any guides on connecting this up to a DJI Naza V2 I am trying to get the tilt to work on my tx?

Thanks
Bruce

Hi Bruce,

You need to take a wire between the control input pin on the gimbal labeled RX-R and F2 on the Naza. Then use the Naza assistant software to enable gimbal control and check that the X1 channel moves when you operate your transmitter's 7th channel. Finally use the BaseCam software to configure the gimbal to detect the RC input.

Alternatively you can wire it directly into your receiver and control it that way. This video shows you how the tilt can be controlled from your radio. You basically just connect a jumper wire from the RX-R signal pin (top row) on the AlexMos to a free channel on your receiver. Then you need to configure it through the BaseCam GUI.

Thank you, got it all working perfectly :)

Do you need to connect a ground wire like in that youtube video?  Or can you just run the single cable from your reciever to the RX-R pin?  Thanks for your other advice.

Hi,

The mini AlexMos control board provides a 5V output which is intended to power a receiver. It might be able to power a GoPro, you would need to check how many amps are needed.

Hi, you mention in your literature that the gimbal can also be setup to be controlled by a second handset, for full control of 2 axes and different operating modes. Can you please provide more information on how to achieve this.

Thanks,

The setup is the same as a single operator configuration, but instead of wiring the signal inputs from the gimbal control board to your main receiver, you would wire it to a second receiver which would then be controlled by another operator using a seperate transmitter. For info about which pins to connect to, please view the comments above.

Hello, I would like to get this gimbal for handheld operation. So, if don´t use any RC setup, nor any drone like the Phantom, would it be possible to just connect the DYS Smart 3 directly to a 3S-Lipo and (in case i need manual control) connect a small jostick which connects directly to the gimbal via wires like the ones being sold to control the Basecam/Alexmos boards of the bigger (DSLR Style) gimbals)? Any help, even a short hint would be greatly appreciated. Since I need to find a quick solution for a project, I would be very thankful for a quick tip, a son as it is possible. Thak you!

Hi, this gimbal would work fine for handheld operation, you might just want to add a handle/grip to it. The setup it just as you describe - connect a 3S LiPo and if you need manual control you can connect a small joystick to it.

Hi will the mounting holes on the gimbal be suitable for the new phantom 2? also with the new phantom I can't put longer legs due to the compass unit being part of the leg. What would you suggest to incease clearance for the gimbal

Regards

Michael

Hi Michael, it can be mounted to the new Phantom 2. It does require more ground clearance for the gimbal. This is easily done by attaching some foam tubing to the landing skids, if you Google it you will see some examples.

Is this gimbal suitable for the new GoPro Hero4, or would it be better to stick to the Hero3/3+?

By admin on

It works perfectly with the GoPro 4. I'll be uploading some 4k footage shot using the DYS Smart gimbal and a GoPro 4 soon.

Hi,

I'm hoping to fit this to an f450 frame, which has rails mounted blow it to mount the gimabl far enough forward to avoid the props in the frame. The rails are 10mm diameter and at 60mm spacing (centre to centre). Will the mounts included work with that spacing, or would I have to look at some sort of adaptor?

Cheers,

Dougie

hi, i have a phantom 2 vision, and i was wondering if i could replace the stock camera with this mount, and also, will i need to modify the phantom 2 vision to get this gimball to work

By admin on

Hi, I know it fits to the Phantom 2, but I'm not sure about the Vision. If you can remove the camer/gimbal from the Vision to effectively become a phantom 2 then it should work. The gimbal has its own controller so you wouldn't need to modify the Phantom to get it to work - you would just need to provide 12volts to power it.

Hi, will this fit my IRIS+?

By Charlie Andrews (not verified) on

Hi, I am considering fitting this to my Tarot T960 that is using 6S Lipo - I understand that the gimbal requires a 12V poer supply but what is the maximum current draw. I need this so I can specify a 6S to 12V voltage converter or to specify what 3S battery I need to purchase.

By admin on

Rated at 2amps max, but I've just used my clamp meter to check and it's showing 0.6amps under normal operation.

Brushless gimbals are currently a hot topic in the quadcopter world. If you want to fly a camera beneath your multirotor and capture super smooth shots you will need one. You might be wondering why you should go for a 3 axis brushless gimbal and not a 2 axis, which are lighter. The obvious answer is the third axis gives you extra stabilisation and hence smoother footage. A 2 axis gimbal has no stabilisation in the pan axis, thus yaw drift from wind or imprecise pilot control will be seen in the footage (look closely at the edge of footage shot by a 2 axis gimbal in windy conditions - more often than not you will see lateral oscillation. This is produced as a result of the flight controller fighting to counteract disturbances – check out this video for an example - see from 0:30. In addition to the stablising benefit, a 3 axis also opens up many new perspectives; particularly in you have a camera operator. By having a yaw axis, the gimbal becomes truly independent from the drone - this disconnection allows for new shooting opportunities; smooth pans, and target locking.
